The way we live is changing. Restricted travel, social distancing, remote learning, and work from home have all become part of our new reality. It has expedited the need to rethink what we require to live our best lives and it may be a little different than what we thought we needed at the turn of the decade. As we settle into our new normal, we have all realized that we must work together to envision what we want for ourselves.
The future of cities is again a topic of conversation. What will cities look like post-pandemic? Will jobs come back? Are evictions and homelessness imminent? Cities will and always have been a hub for young professionals, creatives and students as well as the best place to unveil new solutions to changing needs.
Quarters offers 523 rooms in the U.S., and plans to open two new locations in Brooklyn, NY, and another in Philadelphia by end of year. As Quarters continues to expand its co-living options beyond Europe, it will focus on cities that will benefit from more affordable housing. That’s why Quarters Co-CEO Esther Bahne has her sights on more properties in New York City. “If you look at what happens in times of recessions, there’s always opportunities in the market as well, so we’re definitely looking at things we can branch into,” she says. “One of those might be to buy our next location.”
She’s sure that customer demand will keep pace with Quarters expansion post-Covid-19. “People live with us because they don’t want to feel isolated. We even got requests from people that said, ‘Right now, we want to move in with several friends and take an entire apartment.’ We used to talk about Gen Z and Millennials as a niche, people that want flexibility,” Esther says. “We’re now looking at that as being the norm, people who want to or need to work from anywhere, who don’t know that they can commit to something long term. That sense of flexibility plus you can work from our buildings, they are made for that — is something I feel is going to give us a massive lift up going forward.”

The internet has granted us global access, but our movement has become hyper local which makes finding the right apartment in the right location key. “What I really want to do is take this brand outside the four walls,” Esther says. Quarters is poised to offer a unique opportunity to members once travel restrictions relax. By requesting a new room in the Quarters app, the ability to live and work from any location in 15 cities around the world by just requesting another room will save digital nomads time, money, and unnecessary paperwork.
For now, when a member moves into their new space, Quarters’ community managers help them get acclimated to the city. With brand partnerships in each neighborhood, community managers can recommend local cafes, restaurants, and shopping centers while also giving members instant access to other members via a digital chat space. Esther says,“We have common spaces that we want you to be in [but] we all know what we want to experience is our local neighborhood,” Esther says.
